Wesley Chapel got its first YMCA on September 28, 2026. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA opened the Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA at 4379 Wellbeing Way, a two-story building of 49,319 square feet that cost $35 million, and the Tampa Bay Times reported that more than 6,300 members had signed up by opening day. Most of the coverage has focused on swim lessons, youth sports and childcare. The Y estimates that its immediate service area includes roughly 20,000 seniors.
If you live at Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch, you already have a resort clubhouse, a fitness center that's open around the clock and your own courts. Much of what the new Y offers overlaps with that. A few pieces don't, and those are the reason it matters to you.
Taylor Morrison describes The Venue as having a fitness and aerobics center, a billiard room, a multipurpose room and a catering kitchen. Outside are a heated resort-style pool and spa plus a resistance pool. Residents can use the fitness center 24 hours a day. It has cardio and strength machines, free weights, a movement studio, group fitness classes and personal training. The builder lists tennis, pickleball and bocce under outdoor recreation, along with clinics, leagues and themed mixers.
Here's how the two facilities line up, using the builder's description and the Y's published materials as of October 2026:
| Feature | The Venue at Esplanade | Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA |
|---|---|---|
| Pools | Heated resort-style pool, spa, resistance pool | Lap pool, teaching pool, family adventure pool with waterslide |
| Courts | Outdoor tennis, pickleball, bocce | Indoor gymnasium with open-gym pickleball on two courts |
| Fitness floor | 24-hour access, cardio, strength, free weights | Large fitness center with EGYM tracking technology |
| Older-adult classes | Group fitness offered | SilverSneakers Classic, Zumba Gold, Aqua on the Oct. 12 schedule |
| Hours | 24 hours for the fitness center | 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday |
On strength training and 24-hour access, The Venue matches the Y or does better. The gaps show up in the water and on the courts.
None of the builder's descriptions of Esplanade's pools mentions a lap pool. There's a resort pool for lounging, a spa, and a resistance pool for working against a current. The Y's aquatic center has a dedicated lap pool, a separate teaching pool and a family pool, as Spectrum Bay News 9 reported from the opening.
So if you swim distance, the Y gives you something new: marked lanes for steady laps, in a pool built for that purpose. The Monday, October 12 schedule also listed an Aqua class in the pool from 10:30 to 11:20 a.m. The Y describes it as low-impact exercise where the water carries most of your body weight, which helps with balance and strength.
Esplanade's courts are outdoors, which is fine on a cool morning. During a Florida midday, the Y's gymnasium covers the hours when outdoor courts are hardest to use. On October 12, the branch listed Open Gym-Pickleball from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both Gymnasium Court 1 and Court 2. The Y says it lends paddles and balls to anyone who needs them, and that experienced players are often around to give tips.
That block covers late morning and early afternoon, when the heat is usually at its worst. The schedule shown is for a single day, and the Y's branch page says programs are still being added, so court times may change in the coming weeks.
The October 12 schedule shows how the Y's late morning lines up for an older adult. In order:
Pickleball runs on both gym courts during that same window. If you wanted, you could do a balance class, a water class and a few pickleball games in one visit, all indoors. The Y's general Active Older Adults page also lists Enhance Fitness and Diabetes Prevention among its Healthy Living programs. However, the Y's own Enhance Fitness roster doesn't include this branch yet, so check before planning around it.
That noon SilverSneakers class connects to how the Y handles older-adult memberships. The Tampa YMCA says it accepts SilverSneakers, Renew Active and Silver & Fit. These fitness programs come with many Medicare plans and give full YMCA membership at no additional cost. The Y lists three steps: confirm with your healthcare provider that you're enrolled in one of these programs, bring your provider ID card to the Member Services desk, and have staff activate the membership. Whether a particular plan includes one of these benefits is something only the plan can confirm.
For anyone paying directly, the Y's join page lists these Mary W. Sierra rates as of this writing in October 2026:
The charter offer from late summer, a $0 join fee with a five-year rate guarantee, was only for people who joined before the grand opening, according to the Wesley Chapel Community Website. Those terms no longer apply to new sign-ups.
Esplanade dues already cover The Venue. That means the Y would be a second membership for its lap pool, gym courts and class schedule. If your Medicare plan includes one of these programs, that second membership may cost nothing.
The Venue has a tot lot playground. The Y has a family adventure pool with a waterslide, and the Tampa Bay Times also noted a Stay & Play childcare area. When grandkids are in town, that gives you an indoor-outdoor water option close to home with a slide, which the resort pool at The Venue doesn't have. Before the opening, the Wesley Chapel Community Website described an indoor playground and a Stay & Play area with a puppet theater and train table. The Y's guest and family-access rules aren't covered in the materials reviewed here, so ask at the front desk before you bring visitors.
The Y's location was chosen deliberately. BayCare Health System leased the land next to BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel, which opened in 2023, and the two organizations describe the site as a mix of fitness and preventive health. At the ribbon cutting, Dr. Christopher Bucciarelli, BayCare's vice president of ambulatory service and chief medical officer, said, "health occurs every day in places like this," as quoted by the Tampa Bay Times.
The Y's 2025 announcement put the site at the southwest corner of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Eagleston Boulevard. If you already drive to BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel for appointments, the Y is on the same campus.
The project took a while. The Times reported it was first announced in late 2020 as a 30,000-square-foot, $15 million building planned to open in 2023. It broke ground in May 2025 and ended up larger and more expensive than the original plan. The facility is named for philanthropist Mary W. Sierra, who attended the opening. Her husband's name is on the Bob Sierra Family YMCA in Northdale.
When this post was written in October 2026, the branch page listed hours of 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
